Brief background

Alison Clear has been Chair of School of Computing of Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology, New Zealand (via Wikipedia), since 2009. Prior to that, from 1997 to 2009, she served as Head of the School of Computing and Information Technology at Unitec New Zealand. Alison was Chair of the National Advisory Committee on Computing Qualifications [via the Wayback Machine] from 1988 until 1998 and has chaired national and international conferences, including serving as the General Chair of the NACCQ Annual conference in 2006 (via the Wayback Machine).

Alison’s recent research projects include: women and computing, e-learning implementation, computing and information technology education and the Poverty Alleviation Project in Peru. She is a Fellow of the New Zealand Computer Society (NZCS) and the National Advisory Committee on Computing Qualifications (NACCQ). She has been active in the international computing education community through her involvement in ACM SIGCSE as a board member, vice president, and international representative. She has served as an ACM Ed Council member and was selected as New Zealand Computing Educator of the Century in 2002.

At the time of this interview, Alison Clear was serving as Head of School of Computing and Information Technology at Unitec New Zealand. In 2020, Alison received the SIGCSE Award for Lifetime Service to the Computer Science Education Community with the motivation “For sustained commitment and dedication to computing educators, computing education, excellence in teaching and research and innovative curriculum design nationally and internationally.”
