Brief background

Dame Wendy Hall (DBE) is Professor of Computer Science at the University of Southampton, UK. She was the University’s first female professor of engineering, and from 2002 to 2007 she served as Head of the School of Electronics and Computer Science. She founded the University of Southampton’s Intelligence, Agents, and Multimedia (IAM) Research Group and is a founding director of the Web Science Research Initiative (now the Web Science Trust), a joint initiative between the University of Southampton and MIT.

Wendy Hall was elected President of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), serving from July 2008 through June 2010. Wendy was awarded the 2014 ACM Outstanding Contribution Award “for expanding [the]promise and profile of computing.” She was President of the British Computer Society from 2003 to 2004. In 2005 she became the Vice President of the Royal Academy of Engineering. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire awarded her the title Dame Commander in the new year’s honours list on December 31, 2008, for services to science and technology.
