This session highlighted successful strategies for attracting females to computing. After a brief recap of depressing data, this session delineated steps that are leading to successful recruiting of students into the field. The final focus was a particular role model project, CEOHP, which utilizes personal stories of computing educators told through audio interviews. The presentation considered how CEOHP can serve as a template for garnering the stories of young women who have commenced on paths leading to computing careers.

The poster discussed issues such as artifacts (digital audio interviews, interview transcripts, photographs, vitas, and other relevant items), factors used to select individuals for inclusion in the collection (with attention to balance across factors such as gender, geographic location, age, race/ethnicity, and institutional size), and key uses of the project (to support, recruit, and retain under-represented groups).

A key innovation on this poster was the introduction of a stair-step model to describe the type of mentoring relationships that can be fostered via a strategic approach to including interviewees at various career stages.

With a puzzle-piece theme to give the sense of fitting together many stories to understand trends, this poster presented many of the technical challenges of CEOHP, including defining the main goals, the process of collecting and processing interviews, ideas for how to analyze the content of the interviews and present those results, ethical and legal issues, organizational and archival issues, and organizing a set of web portals to provide different views of the collection.

This SIGCSE BOF explored ways to enhance curricular planning through the use of interviews such as those being collected as part of the Computing Educators Oral History Project (CEOHP). Participants considered examples of materials and explored ideas for other materials that can be effective in recruiting, retaining, and supporting individuals at all stages of the pipeline, but particularly pre-college students, undergraduates, and graduate students.

This BOF was designed for those who wish to find out more about the project and ways to get involved with it. At the end of the session, audience members should have understood the goals of the oral history project and had a basic grasp of the fundamentals of conducting and preserving interviews. The session was intended to provide the information needed for someone to decide whether they would attend a training workshop to become an interviewer. The session also helped refine selection criteria and names of women who could be candidate interviewees.

Organizers highlighted recent developments in CEOHP and reported briefly on the current status of the process of collecting and processing interviews, as well as on the results from the ITiCSE 2008 Working Group (Almstrum et al., 2008). Participants had the opportunity to react to existing materials, share ideas for continued growth of the project, and explore novel ways in which the interviews and other materials of CEOHP can be used in pre-college and college settings throughout the world.

This workshop was designed as a first step in training interviewers for CEOHP. The workshop provided background, techniques, guidelines, equipment selection criteria, and demonstrations of conducting interviews. By the end of the workshop, participants could expect to understand the project’s goals and be positioned to undertake further training to become project contributors as interviewers and consultants.

This workshop explained the history and objectives of CEOHP to ensure that all attendees understood the goals of the project. We conducted a guided exploration of the project via the web portal to help attendees see the variety of approaches to using this data for work products to support mentoring across institutional settings, experience levels, and ages. To help participants appreciate the richness of interviews as a data source, we asked them to work in small groups to analyze sample interviews that we had preprocessed. After a brief work period, we reconvened to compare findings and discuss how the interviews could be used to provide support for mentoring in different settings.
